GROWTH AND DISTRIBUTION
Total population (16/01/2003): 36.078
inhabitants
Density of population: 138 inhabitants / sqkm
The population growth of the township throughout
history is considered as quite balanced in relation to the
whole of the island. In the 16th Century population was of about 5,000 inhabitants, increasing
to 7,000 in the 18th Century. The population expansion began
in the 19th Century, reaching about 13,000 inhabitants at
the beginning of the 20th Century. Starting from 1920 a
strong growth took place until 1940 (19,000) when it came
to stagnation. In the 60s the expansion went on again, and
with some periods of more moderated expansion it continues
up to day.
In general, the increase of this last phase is characterised
by the immigration wave, which is caused by the economical
expansion and the development of the tourist sector at the
same time.
The population is distributed in different
centres. 74 % concentrates in the town of Manacor while
Porto Cristo bears 16 %, with a very remarkable increase
during the last years. The rest is distributed among s'Illot,
Cales de Mallorca, Son Macià, Cala Murada, Cala Anguila
and Cala Mendia.
